Matt Gaetz Sues to Block Release of House Ethics Report

Former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz initiated legal action on Monday to prevent the publication of a House Ethics Committee report concerning allegations about his past conduct. The lawsuit, filed in a Washington, D.C. federal court, argues that the committee lacks jurisdiction over Gaetz as he is no longer a member of Congress. His legal team asserts that the allegations within the report, which reportedly involve sexual misconduct and drug use, are false and untrue.

The House Ethics Committee's investigation into Gaetz concluded abruptly last month following his resignation from the House. This resignation occurred shortly after he had been nominated, and subsequently withdrew, as Attorney General. The committee's decision to release the report despite his resignation prompted Gaetz's legal challenge.

Gaetz's lawsuit contends that the impending release of the report would inflict irreparable harm on his reputation and career. The suit emphasizes the weight of official Congressional findings and the widespread media attention such a report would generate. It further argues that the committee’s actions violate due process and established procedural rules, constituting an overreach of their authority.

Gaetz has previously maintained his innocence on social media, asserting that he was never charged with any wrongdoing and was fully exonerated. He has characterized the allegations as stemming from individuals with animosity towards him. Gaetz admits to past personal indiscretions but insists he never engaged in illegal activity, especially concerning sexual contact with a minor. He has described his younger years as a period of intense work and excessive partying but emphasizes that he now leads a different life.
