Following his 25-game suspension for brandishing a firearm on social media, Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has sent a message of resilience and determination. The suspension, handed down by the NBA for a second such incident, will sideline Morant for the start of the 2023-24 season. The incident, captured on Instagram Live, occurred in a vehicle and involved Morant's friend, Davonte Pack.
Despite widespread criticism of his actions, Morant received words of encouragement from veteran NBA guard Isaiah Thomas, who predicted a dominant return for the young star. Thomas attributed this anticipated success partly to the mentorship of Derrick Rose, who recently joined the Grizzlies. Thomas tweeted, "Watch what type of season Ja has next year with D Rose connected to his hip all year long. Once he gets off suspension he will have his best season yet. That D rose presence going to have him on some MVP s---…Watch!"

Morant responded to Thomas's tweet with a confident "you too loud OG. they gon feel me fasho." He followed up with a more reflective message, seemingly alluding to his current situation: "you know life ain’t tied with a bow but it’s still a gift tho..yeah life ain’t fair but it’s still good tho, it’s a blessing just to be here.."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver addressed the suspension, stating, "Ja Morant’s decision to once again wield a firearm on social media is alarming and disconcerting given his similar conduct in March for which he was already suspended eight games. The potential for other young people to emulate Ja’s conduct is particularly concerning." Silver emphasized the need for Morant to prioritize personal growth and complete a league-approved program before returning to the court.
This 25-game suspension will cost Morant approximately $7.5 million in salary. He was previously suspended for eight games in March for a similar incident involving a firearm at a Denver nightclub. Many hope that Rose's guidance will help Morant navigate these challenges and fulfill his potential, both on and off the court. Morant's on-court talent is undeniable, but his off-court behavior remains a concern, especially considering his upcoming five-year, $197.23 million contract.
