The perpetrator, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a Texas resident and U.S. Army veteran, drove a truck into a crowd of holiday revelers before being fatally shot by police.
Secretary Mayorkas, speaking on "Your World," characterized the attack as an act of homegrown violent extremism, highlighting the suspect's apparent radicalization by ISIS ideology. He noted this concerning trend has been escalating over the past decade.
As families and friends grapple with the aftermath and identify the victims, investigators have uncovered an ISIS flag within the Ford pickup truck used in the attack. Furthermore, the FBI's Counterterrorism Division revealed that Jabbar documented his drive from Houston to New Orleans, posting videos online expressing allegiance to ISIS.
Despite the tragedy, Secretary Mayorkas emphasized the nation's commitment to upholding its democratic values and way of life, refusing to let fear dictate the American experience. He underscored the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to ensure public safety and national security, screening and addressing individuals who present a threat.
