Potential Defense Secretary Hegseth Faces Pressure to Purge 'Woke' Military Leaders

Pete Hegseth's nomination for Defense Secretary is facing scrutiny as a conservative group, the American Accountability Foundation (AAF), urges him to dismiss twenty senior military officers they label as "woke." The AAF's letter, obtained by Fox News Digital, targets officers, including eight women, for their public statements and social media activity promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The AAF argues that these initiatives detract from national security, a view echoed by Hegseth. However, some military leaders have expressed concerns about the list and its potential impact.

AAF President Thomas Jones, in his letter to Hegseth, asserts that the "woke takeover of the military" poses a significant threat to national security, especially given rising global tensions with countries like Iran, Russia, and China. He insists that those responsible for implementing DEI policies should be removed. The AAF has publicly reiterated its stance on social media, demanding the dismissal of these officers and claiming that DEI policies endanger military personnel.

Hegseth, a former National Guard officer, aligns with Trump's objective to eliminate diversity programs within the military. He has consistently criticized DEI policies, advocating for meritocracy and arguing that these initiatives divert attention from war preparedness. If confirmed, Hegseth would oversee 1.3 million active-duty service members and nearly 1 million civilian employees.

Among those targeted by the AAF are Air Force Col. Ben Jonsson, for a 2020 op-ed urging white colleagues to address racial bias; Navy Vice Admiral Jeffery Hughes, for speaking at a DEI summit; and Air Force Maj. Gen. Elizabeth Arledge, for her social media posts discussing whiteness and organizational theory. Navy Vice Admiral Shoshana Chatfield is also criticized for a 2015 speech emphasizing the importance of diversity.

While a Trump transition team spokesperson clarified that no policy is official unless it comes directly from President Trump, a defense official, speaking anonymously, expressed hope for further discussion and context-sharing with the incoming administration. Former Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel warned of the potential repercussions of such a list, suggesting that it could lead military members to prioritize self-preservation over their duties. Amidst this controversy, reports emerged that Trump might consider Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as an alternative nominee for Defense Secretary. Hegseth, however, has affirmed his commitment to the position, stating he will continue to fight as long as he has Trump's support.
