A devastating incident unfolded in Washington, D.C. on Thursday when a pregnant woman was fatally shot in what authorities believe was a targeted attack. The newborn baby, delivered after the shooting, remains in critical condition. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) reported the shooting took place around 11:20 a.m. in the 300 block of 37th Street Southeast.
The victim, identified as 22-year-old Samya Gill of Fort Washington, was sitting in a parked car with a male companion when another vehicle approached. Two armed men exited the second vehicle and opened fire, striking both Gill and the man multiple times. The man sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Gill tragically passed away after giving birth.

Police have released security footage of the suspects fleeing the scene in their vehicle. Assistant Chief of Patrol Services, Andre Wright, described the daytime shooting as a "brazen act" and confirmed that investigators believe the attack was targeted based on their review of surveillance video. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

This tragic incident comes shortly after another pregnant woman was shot and killed in her car at a Seattle traffic stop, highlighting a disturbing trend of violence against expectant mothers.
