Typhoon Talim Impacts Hong Kong, Schools and Markets Closed

Hong Kong experienced disruptions on Monday as Typhoon Talim passed south of the city, forcing closures of schools and the stock market. Over 100 individuals sought shelter as the city prepared for the storm's impact. Several services, including some government operations and ferries, were temporarily suspended, and a number of events were postponed. The airport authority reported 16 flight cancellations.

Early Monday, the Hong Kong Observatory issued a No. 8 typhoon signal, the third highest level of warning in the city's weather system, and the first such warning of 2023.

As Typhoon Talim, with sustained winds reaching 87 mph, moved further from Hong Kong during the afternoon, the observatory lowered the warning level. The storm was predicted by China's National Meteorological Center to make landfall in Guangdong and Hainan provinces Monday night. It is then expected to cross the Gulf of Tonkin, impacting the Guangxi region on Tuesday, and subsequently weaken over Vietnam on Wednesday.

Hong Kong authorities received reports of 32 fallen trees and two flooding incidents. Residents were advised to avoid coastal areas as the storm passed.
