Her remarks come amid ongoing debates surrounding transgender rights, including participation in sports and access to gender-affirming care. Jean-Pierre has previously defended transgender individuals, stating that they are the ones under attack and that the administration "has their back." She recently criticized a reporter for suggesting that parents are concerned about their daughters' safety when competing against biological males, calling the rhetoric "dangerous."
This stance has drawn criticism, particularly in light of recent incidents involving transgender athletes. High school volleyball player Payton McNabb, who suffered a concussion after competing against a transgender athlete, criticized Jean-Pierre for "playing the victim" and shifting the focus away from the safety concerns of female athletes.
Jean-Pierre also discussed the mass shootings that occurred early in her tenure and the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision.
