Washington Mystics guard Natasha Cloud addressed criticism following her controversial remarks about the United States in the wake of recent Supreme Court decisions. Cloud, a 2019 WNBA champion, defended her stance, explaining her perspective as a Black, gay woman in America.
In a series of tweets, Cloud elaborated on her earlier statement calling the country "trash," emphasizing the need for those with inherent privileges to understand the experiences of non-white Americans. She highlighted the disparities and challenges faced by marginalized communities, citing issues like unequal opportunities, healthcare access, mass shootings, white supremacy, maternal mortality rates, police brutality, mass incarceration, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Cloud acknowledged her own privileged upbringing with white parents who worked tirelessly to provide for her, but stressed that everyone deserves equal opportunities regardless of their background. She reiterated her commitment to serving her communities and advocating for change.

Cloud's comments sparked backlash, with some suggesting she move to another country. She responded by listing several areas where she believes other nations surpass the U.S. in terms of human rights and social progress. Cloud also challenged critics to consider the realities of being Black or LGBTQ+ in America today, emphasizing the prevalence of racism and discrimination.

Further, Cloud criticized the politicization and weaponization of religion in the country, contrasting it with her understanding of God as love. Her initial comments followed Supreme Court rulings on affirmative action and a case involving a website designer who refused to create websites for same-sex weddings.
