A Luxurious Inflatable Tiny House: Exploring the Esch 22 Space Station

Forget cramped quarters – imagine a mobile living space that expands to triple its size with an inflatable dome, resembling a futuristic space station. This innovative housing concept, known as the Esch 22 Space Station (E22SS PIU!), is the brainchild of architectural firm 2001 and was designed for Esch-Alzette, Luxembourg's second-largest city.

A Mobile Tiny House with a Unique Twist

The E22SS PIU! is essentially a six-person mobile tiny house, easily transported and resembling a stainless steel trailer in its compact form. Inside, it contains a bathroom, kitchen, and dining area. But its true marvel lies in its ability to transform.

Expanding the Living Space

Upon reaching its destination, the E22SS PIU! unfolds two wings, forming a circular platform with a diameter of nearly 30 feet. Covered with eco-friendly cork, this platform serves as the base for a double-shell pneumatic dome. Inflating in just 15 minutes, the dome creates a spacious sleeping area for up to six people.

Sustainable and Innovative Design

This innovative structure boasts a water recycling system, repurposing wastewater for toilet flushing. An elevator ensures accessibility to the upper level for those with mobility challenges. The use of cork flooring further underscores the project's commitment to sustainability.

A Provocative Experiment in Housing

Part of Esch's Capital of Culture program, the E22SS PIU! isn't intended for everyday living but rather serves as a thought-provoking exploration of resource usage in architecture and society. It encourages dialogue about innovative housing solutions and challenges conventional notions of collective living. According to Philippe Nathan, founder of 2001, the project is "a provocation — an experimental construct that redefines collective living."
