Biden's Interactions with Xi Jinping: A History and Recent Controversy

President Biden recently highlighted his extensive history of interactions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, stating he's spent over 68 hours with him during one-on-one meetings. These remarks, made during a speech in Chicago about his economic agenda, emphasized the depth of their past engagement, beginning during Biden's vice presidency.

Biden recounted traveling 17,000 miles with Xi and engaging in numerous discussions, exceeding his interactions with any other head of state. He clarified that these meetings began when Xi was vice president under President Hu Jintao and were conducted with a simultaneous interpreter present. Biden also mentioned submitting records of these meetings.

This revelation sparked a reaction from House Republicans on the Oversight and Accountability Committee, who linked the meetings to Biden family business dealings with Chinese companies. This comes amidst escalating tensions between the U.S. and China.

The timing of these comments coincides with the fallout from Biden's earlier labeling of Xi as a "dictator" during a California fundraiser. Biden's remark, referencing Xi's alleged surprise regarding the Chinese spy balloon incident, drew sharp criticism from China, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning calling it "extremely absurd and irresponsible" and a "blatant political provocation."

Despite the diplomatic friction, Biden defended his statement, asserting it wouldn't hinder U.S.-China relations. He pointed to Secretary of State Antony Blinken's recent visit to China as evidence of continued engagement. Biden expressed optimism about a future meeting with Xi and downplayed the impact of the "dictator" comment.

China, however, strongly condemned Biden's characterization of Xi, deeming it a violation of diplomatic protocol and an infringement on China's political dignity. Mao reiterated China's displeasure with the remarks, emphasizing their factual inaccuracy and offensive nature. Despite the strained relations, Biden expressed hope for continued cooperation with China, acknowledging it would require time.
