Rep. Hoyle Exits DOGE Caucus Over Musk's Cost-Cutting Measures

Oregon Representative Val Hoyle, a Democrat, has withdrawn from the Congressional Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Caucus, citing concerns over Elon Musk's involvement and cost-cutting strategies within the executive branch. Hoyle's departure comes amid controversy surrounding Musk's role in the agency and its impact on government services.

Hoyle initially joined the caucus with the intention of promoting responsible use of taxpayer money and streamlining government operations. However, she now argues that Musk's actions, independent of the caucus itself, have undermined these goals. She alleges that DOGE, under Musk's influence, prioritizes tax breaks for billionaires at the expense of the working class.

In a statement released on X (formerly Twitter), Hoyle expressed her frustration, stating that Musk's actions are "burning down the government and the law." She further criticized Musk for allegedly prioritizing personal gain over the needs of Americans who rely on government services. Hoyle also voiced alarm over Musk's team accessing sensitive Treasury payment systems and accused them of employing intimidation tactics against government employees.

DOGE, established by President Trump's executive order, aims to reduce government waste and enhance transparency in spending. This temporary White House organization is set to operate until July 4, 2026. A recent court order limited DOGE's access to sensitive Treasury records following concerns raised by lawmakers like Hoyle.

Hoyle's resignation follows DOGE's targeting of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), resulting in the dismissal of numerous officials and the agency's absorption into the State Department. This move, part of a broader effort to pause U.S. foreign assistance, has sparked protests and led to layoffs within aid organizations.

DOGE has also focused on eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, consulting contracts, and underutilized leases for federal buildings, claiming significant cost savings. The agency asserts it is saving the federal government approximately $1 billion daily through various measures, including halting unnecessary hiring, cutting DEI initiatives, and stopping allegedly improper payments to foreign entities.
