Former Hunter College professor Shellyne Rodriguez, who allegedly threatened a New York Post reporter with a machete, appeared in a Bronx court on Monday, June 26, 2023. A status hearing confirmed that the District Attorney's office had fulfilled all discovery requirements, and a possible disposition date has been scheduled for August 14, 2023. The order of protection for reporter Ruven Fenton and photographer Robert Miller, who were allegedly targeted in the machete incident, has been extended until at least that date.
Rodriguez, 45, surrendered to authorities on May 25th following the alleged incident. She faces charges of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree menacing, and menacing (classified as a violation). Rodriguez maintains her innocence and claims the incident has negatively affected her mental well-being.

Following the release of the video capturing the alleged confrontation, Hunter College terminated Rodriguez's employment as an adjunct professor. Rodriguez has stated that the college succumbed to pressure from racist, white nationalist, and misogynistic groups.
